Renewal of Essential Equipment in the Department of Radiology and the Operating Theatre due to Obsolescence of Equipment at Hospital of Mataró

Project location: SPAIN, Mataró
Project start date: February 2017 - Project end date: June 2017
Project number: 2017-022
Beneficiary: Consorci Sanitari Del Maresme

The Consorci Sanitari del Maresme (CSdM) is a public healthcare consortium constituted in 1999. This Consortium is formed by representatives of the Government of Catalonia (Generalitat de Catalunya) and the Municipal Government of the city of Mataró. The CSdM was founded by merging two historical healthcare entities with old installations inside the city and its activities started with the construction of a new hospital that was built between 1995-1998.

The Consorci Sanitari del Maresme (CSdM) has suffered from a lack of investment in the last 8 years due to the economic crisis that affected Catalonia and Spain since 2010. From 2010 to 2015, the public health budget approved by the Parliament of Catalonia was reduced by 18% and the capacity of investment of CSdM declined. More than 50% of the equipment was purchased in 1999 when the new hospital opened, 18 years ago, and they have become obsolete. It will be a big challenge for CSdM in the next years to meet the increased demand on healthcare services, with fast aging population, and to improve and renew the technical equipment in this poor economic situation.

In 2016 the Consorci completed a technical audit to determine the medical equipment and the technology that is becoming obsolete and the amount it will need for renovation of clinical equipment in the near future. It has extensive information on the state of all its equipment, and the result of the audit was that it will need to spend around 8 million euros in the next 6 years. That sum is needed to replace old, obsolete or deactivated equipment and to improve the technologic level and the safety of the hospital. The financial resources of the Consortium can meet less than 30 per cent of this sum.

The Consorci is proposing to buy two groups of equipment that are urgently needed. Both investments will renew obsolete/outdated devices.

1) Digital Radiology X-Ray system

The aim is to replace one of the digital radiology stations at the X-Ray Department. A work station of the last generation is needed, a system with high range, multifunction, and with fluoroscopy support. This radiology workstation will replace current equipment that is damaged and outdated.

2) Anesthesia system for three operating rooms

The aim is to replace 3 compact anesthesia stations in the three main operating rooms in the Department of Surgery. Each one of these stations is fully equipped for complex anesthetic procedures, and has monitoring controls, breathing system, and all the modern anesthesia technology. They will replace the 3 outdated stations and improve the complexity and safety of the surgical procedures.

The Nando Peretti Foundation, Delegació a Catalunya has awarded a grant to cover partially the costs for the purchase of one Digital Radiology X-Ray system and three Anesthesia system for operating rooms.
